The debates between ‘Spitzenkandidaten’ coloured the EP electoral campaign. EurActiv participated in this initiative as a media partner of each event and coverages the election campaigns in 10 languages.
Ultimately, the European parties won the day. In the face of tremendous challenges and under pressure from Eurosceptics, the powerbrokers showed great responsibility in forming a coalition that will lead our institutions over the next five years.
After the Hearings and the Parliament’s validation of the new Commission, let’s hope that the new college will prove to be more adept in their roles and better than in the past. By January the restraints and priorities will have been set out: so now is the time to update strategies, to exert influence.
Will this be adequate to increase the efficiency of the Union? Alas, no. We need real debates across countries and tools suited to the 21st century. Europe’s national media are far from satisfied, and EurActiv plans to help them.
First, the essentials. The EU hopes to replace the heading “Europe 2020” with a more inspiring narrative; an unprecedented interinstitutional “programme of union” is even envisaged. All this calls for more than the simple “relaying” of information: a real cross-border flow of ideas, made possible thanks to our network in 12 languages, with original or localised articles from 12 EU capitals.
Next, BlogActiv and our editorial offices in Berlin, Paris and Brussels/London are integrating better, with more external contributions, interactivity and systematic translation between English, French and German.
Finally, co-financed by a consortium under the European research programme, EurActiv is developing new tools for the visualisation of influence and procedures.
